A water change is dilution: swap a third of the water and you cut nitrate by about a third. This aquarium water change calculator turns your tank volume and your current and target nitrate into the exact percentage and number of gallons to replace.
Aquarium Water Change Calculator
Enter your tank volume and your current and target nitrate to see how big a water change you need, and exactly how much water to swap.
A water change dilutes nitrate in proportion to the water you replace: swap a third of the water and nitrate drops by about a third. Keep routine changes to 20 to 30 percent weekly. Add dechlorinator for the new water and match its temperature to the tank before pouring it in.
How water changes actually lower nitrate
Nitrate only leaves the tank when you physically carry it out, and a water change is the main way to do that. The math is direct: remove a quarter of the water and you remove a quarter of the nitrate. That is why one big change rarely rescues a neglected tank, and two spaced changes do. If your tap water already carries nitrate, that number is your floor; you cannot dilute below it.
How much and how often
For routine upkeep, 20 to 30 percent a week keeps nitrate stable without swinging pH, hardness or temperature. Save the bigger changes for when a test shows nitrate above 40 ppm. Our guide on how often to change aquarium water sets the schedule by stocking level, and how to lower nitrate covers the upstream fixes.
Do it without shocking the fish
Match the new water’s temperature to the tank and add dechlorinator before it goes in. Pour slowly. If the calculator asks for more than half the tank, split it into two changes a day apart. Know your true volume first with the aquarium volume calculator so the percentage lands on the right number of gallons. Every tool is on the aquarium calculators hub.
Frequently asked questions
What size water change do I need to lower nitrate?
Divide your target nitrate by your current nitrate, subtract that from one, and the result is the fraction to change. Going from 60 to 20 ppm is a 67 percent change, best split into two. The calculator does this for you.
How much water should I change weekly?
20 to 30 percent for most community tanks, more for heavily stocked or messy fish like goldfish.
Can I change too much water at once?
Yes. Over 50 percent at once swings chemistry and temperature enough to stress fish. Split large changes across two days.
