What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. On your next visit
the site can read it back. Cookies are what let a site remember that you have already filled in
your name, or that you dismissed a notice. They cannot run programs or carry viruses.
Some cookies are set by this site directly (“first-party”). Others are set by a service we
use, such as Google Analytics, which measures traffic (“third-party”).
Cookies this site uses
| Type | Purpose | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Keep the site working, remember your comment name and email so you do not retype them, and protect forms against abuse. | This site |
| Preferences | Remember small choices, such as a dismissed notice. | This site |
| Analytics | Count visits and see which guides are read, in aggregate, so we know what to improve. | Google Analytics |
Analytics cookies in more detail
We use Google Analytics 4 to measure traffic. It sets cookies to tell repeat visits apart and
to count which guides get read. You can opt out by installing the
Google
Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by blocking cookies in your browser (see below).
Advertising
This site uses Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads
based on your prior visits to this site or to other websites. The advertising cookies come mainly
from the google.com and doubleclick.net domains and are used to show relevant ads, limit how often
you see the same ad, and measure ad performance.
You can opt out of personalised advertising at
Google Ads
Settings or at
www.aboutads.info,
and read how
Google uses advertising cookies for details. Blocking these cookies does not stop you from
reading the site.
How to control cookies yourself
Every major browser lets you view, block and delete cookies. Look for “Cookies and site data”
under privacy settings in Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge. You can usually:
- delete all existing cookies;
- block third-party cookies while allowing first-party ones;
- block cookies from specific sites, including this one;
- browse in a private or incognito window, which discards cookies when you close it.
Blocking all cookies is your right, but be aware that comment forms and some embedded content
may stop behaving correctly.
Do Not Track
Browsers can send a “Do Not Track” signal. There is still no agreed standard for how sites
should respond to it, so we do not rely on it. Use the opt-out link above or your browser’s
cookie controls instead, as those actually take effect.
Changes
If we add or remove a service that sets cookies, we will update this page and change the date
at the top.
